A tall order in Sheffield’s win over the Giants

The Belfast Giants were beaten 7-1 by Elite League leaders Sheffield Steelers at the Utilita Arena on Saturday night.

The hosts led 5-1 after the first period with Evan Mosey scoring their first game before JJ Piccinich equalized.

Sheffield won with goals from Anthony Deluca, Marc-Olivier Vallerand, Tanner Eberle and Kevin Schulze.

Matias Sointu and David Phillips extended the lead in the third period to leave the Giants with three losses in their first five league games.

The Steelers opened the scoring with Mosey at close range in the fourth minute of the game, but the Giants responded within the minute with Piccinich.

However, the game was almost over at the first break as three goals in less than three minutes halfway through the first period gave the home side quick control.

Deluca made it 2-1, blasting the puck past Tyler Beskorowany for the Giants’ goal. Vallerand added another with a nice wrist shot on a Sheffield power play.

Eberle scored the Steelers’ fourth goal, pushing the puck home after escaping Beskorowany. The Giants, understandably, called for a timeout and tried to regroup, to concede a fifth goal, scored by Schulze in a three-on-one breakaway in the last minute before the break.

Jackson Whistle replaced Beskorowany as the Giants looked to save something from the game. He didn’t concede a goal in the second period, which saw no more goals scored from either side, but Sheffield then added two more goals in the third.

Sointu scored on a power play, before former Giants Phillips added a seventh, beating Whistle with a shot from the blue line with just over a minute to go.
