The success of the premier Novita SANFL wheelchair football league has been reflected in its shortlisting for a prestigious Sport SA award to be announced later this month.
Introduced in 2021, the Novita SANFL Wheelchair Football League is in the running to win the Active Inclusion Award on Sunday, November 14.
Played from July through September, the competition featured teams representing four SANFL clubs – Central District, Norwood, Sturt and Woodville-West Torrens.
Played on a basketball court with goal posts at either end, wheelchair football involves teams of five competing against two defenders, two forwards and a midfielder.
The teams were made up of mixed gender players, including a mix of people with and without disabilities, ensuring the sport was attractive to everyone.
SANFLW Best and Fairest 2021 winner – Lauren Young of West Adelaide – was shortlisted for the Emerging Athlete of the Year award after her stunning debut season with the Bloods.
Only 15 years old in her first senior season at SANFLW, Young averaged 18.7 eliminations, four points and five tackles playing a major role in helping her team to their first Grand Final.
The dynamic utility also won the Powerade Breakthrough Player Award while being the center stage shortlist for 2021 The Advertiser SANFLW Team of the Year.
