Sadly, the Texas A&M football team had to use their depth more than they wanted this season with just three games played and a 3-0 record in the books. The Aggies have already turned to their replacement quarterback Zach Calzada and worked on a handful of receivers week after week.
On the bright side, there might not be a team with more offensive depth than A&M. For example, in the absence of Caleb Chapman, Demond Demas replaced and had a 100-yard receiving game where he landed his first touchdown reception. He looked like a man among the boys.
But this same replacement raises an interesting question.
Who will lead the Texas A&M football team in receiving yards and touchdowns in 2021?
Before the year, there would have been a few obvious candidates: Caleb Chapman, Ainias Smith or Jalen Wydermyer. As it stands, Wydermyer and Smith remain the team’s two best yardage compilers this season. Wydermyer is 141 meters away, while Smith is 135 meters away.
But none of those numbers are too impressive and if you look at the list it looks like this could be anyone’s year to lead the team. For example, Chase Lane and Demond Demas are both 100 yards or more, while a pair of running backs from Devon Achane and Isaiah Spiller are each at least 69 yards in the air. Somewhere in between you’ll see Caleb Chapman with 98 receiving yards.
In all likelihood, this is just a testament to the impact the quarterback’s situation has on the offense of this team as a whole. Whether you like it or not, Calzada will rather switch to different players than Haynes King would. It is that simple.
So with a quarterback spot to be reshuffled when King returns from injury next month, we may not have a clear idea of ââwho will lead this team in the air until the end of the season.
Over the past few weeks, Smith may have looked like the obvious candidate, but Demas almost amassed his total with just two catches – that’s how close it is. If I had to guess I would say Wydermyer will become a more prevalent target on the road as he’s been a rare piece of consistency in this team.
Always according to Caleb Chapman’s Status, he could be the front desk manager. Or Smith. Or Demas. Or even Lane. And we’re back where we started.
If you take anything away from this article, it should be one thing – one of this team’s top five pass catchers is talented enough to be number one on one of the top ten teams. You shouldn’t worry about who it will be. On the contrary, get excited that anyone can be this guy.
